ROAM Fridge Freezer Not Cooling: Troubleshooting Guide

If your Subcold ROAM fridge freezer is not cooling, is not starting, or does not appear to be operating correctly, there are several checks you can carry out before contacting Customer Service.

The ROAM range uses a compressor cooling system with built-in voltage protection and diagnostic error codes. In many cases, cooling issues can be caused by the power supply, temperature setting, ventilation, battery protection, overloading, or the lid not sealing correctly.

Check the Power Supply

First, make sure the fridge is receiving a reliable power supply.

Check that:

  • The appliance is correctly connected to the power source.

  • All connectors are fully and securely fitted.

  • The power supply or socket is operating correctly.

  • The fuse has not blown.

  • The control panel illuminates when the appliance is switched on.

  • The power cable and connectors are not damaged.

  • The input voltage is not too low.

If using the fridge from a vehicle, low battery voltage may cause the fridge to stop cooling even though the display remains active.

The ROAM's built-in battery protection system can automatically stop the compressor when the supply voltage falls below the selected protection level.

Check the Temperature Setting

Make sure the selected temperature is low enough for the cooling you require.

If the selected temperature is already warmer than the temperature detected inside the fridge, the compressor may remain switched off because no additional cooling is required.

Try reducing the temperature setting and allow the fridge several minutes to respond.

Remember that there is normally a short delay before the compressor begins operating.

Check the Lid Is Fully Closed

Make sure the fridge lid closes completely.

Check that:

  • Food or drinks are not preventing the lid from closing.

  • Packaging is not trapped around the lid.

  • The seal is clean.

  • The seal is not damaged or deformed.

  • The lid sits evenly against the fridge body.

A damaged or poorly positioned seal allows warm air into the compartment and can significantly reduce cooling performance. The ROAM manual identifies an inadequate lid seal as one of the causes of poor operation.

Check the Ventilation

Adequate airflow around the fridge is essential.

Make sure:

  • The ventilation inlet is clear.

  • The ventilation outlet is clear.

  • Nothing is covering the cooling vents.

  • The fridge is not pushed tightly against another object.

  • There is sufficient space around the appliance for heat to escape.

Poor ventilation prevents the refrigeration system from releasing heat effectively and can result in reduced cooling performance or high module temperatures.

Check the Ambient Temperature

Very high surrounding temperatures can make the fridge work harder and reduce cooling performance.

Avoid positioning the appliance:

  • In direct sunlight

  • Inside an excessively hot vehicle

  • Close to heaters or other heat sources

  • In enclosed areas with poor ventilation

Where possible, move the fridge to a cooler, shaded, and well-ventilated location.

The manual identifies high environmental temperature as another potential cause of poor cooling performance.

Check the Fridge Is Not Overloaded

Overloading the fridge can restrict internal cooling and increase the time required to reach the selected temperature.

If the compartment is tightly packed:

  • Remove some items.

  • Leave space between products where possible.

  • Avoid completely blocking internal airflow.

  • Allow additional cooling time after loading room-temperature items.

The manual recommends removing some contents if the appliance is overloaded.

Allow Time After Adding Warm Items

If a large amount of room-temperature food or drinks has recently been placed inside, the fridge may take significantly longer to reach its selected temperature.

For quicker cooling:

  • Use pre-chilled items where possible.

  • Keep the lid closed.

  • Avoid repeatedly checking the temperature.

  • Use MAX mode temporarily if faster cooling is required.

Once the required temperature has been reached, ECO mode can normally be used for maintaining it.

ROAM Error Codes

If the fridge detects a problem with the power supply, compressor, cooling fan, control module, or temperature sensor, an error code may appear on the display.

The compressor may stop operating until the issue has been resolved.

E0 – Temperature Sensor Fault

E0 indicates a problem with the temperature sensor.

According to the ROAM manual, the temperature sensor is not replaceable and the appliance will require further attention or replacement.

Contact Subcold Customer Service if E0 is displayed.

E1 – Input Voltage Too Low

E1 means the fridge has detected that the input voltage is too low.

This is particularly common when operating the appliance from a vehicle battery.

Check:

  • The vehicle battery voltage.

  • The 12V/24V connection.

  • The power cable and connectors.

  • The selected battery protection level.

You may also need to adjust the battery protection setting.

Once the voltage returns to a suitable level, the fridge should be able to resume operation.

E2 – Cooling Fan Protection

E2 indicates DC fan over-current protection.

Switch the fridge off and check the cooling fan area.

Look for:

  • Dust

  • Debris

  • Foreign objects

  • Anything preventing the fan from rotating

  • Visible damage to the fan

Do not place fingers or tools into the fan while the appliance is connected to power.

The manual recommends checking the cooling fan when E2 is displayed.

E3 – Abnormal Compressor Start

E3 indicates that the compressor has not started normally.

To reset the appliance:

  1. Switch the fridge off.

  2. Disconnect it from the power supply.

  3. Leave it switched off for approximately 30 minutes.

  4. Reconnect the fridge.

  5. Switch it back on.

The manual recommends a 30-minute power-off period for this error.

E4 – Abnormal Compressor Speed

E4 indicates an abnormal compressor operating speed.

Try changing the compressor operating mode between:

  • ECO

  • MAX

Then monitor the fridge to see whether normal cooling resumes.

E5 – Module Temperature Too High

E5 means the control module has become too hot.

Check that:

  • The ventilation openings are clear.

  • The fridge has enough space around it.

  • The appliance is not in direct sunlight.

  • The surrounding area is not excessively hot.

Move the fridge to a cooler, well-ventilated area and allow it to cool before restarting it.

E6 – Control Module Hardware Fault

E6 indicates a control-module hardware fault.

Try the following:

  1. Switch the appliance off.

  2. Disconnect it from the power supply.

  3. Leave it powered off for approximately 30 minutes.

  4. Reconnect and restart the fridge.

If E6 remains after restarting, the control module may require replacement.

Restarting the Fridge After an Error

Once the cause of an error has been corrected:

  1. Switch the fridge off.

  2. Disconnect the power supply.

  3. Reconnect the appliance.

  4. Switch it back on.

The normal temperature display should return.

Allow approximately 1 minute for the compressor to restart and resume refrigeration.

Water-Flowing Sound Inside the Fridge

A sound similar to water flowing through the appliance is normal.

This is caused by refrigerant circulating through the refrigeration system and does not indicate a leak or fault.

Fridge Sounds Louder When Starting

The compressor may temporarily sound louder when it first starts.

The motor is accelerating from a stationary position to its operating speed, which can create a brief increase in noise.

Once the compressor reaches its normal operating speed, the sound should reduce.

This is considered normal operation.

If the fridge is producing excessive vibration, also check that:

  • It is standing on a flat surface.

  • It is level and stable.

  • It is not touching nearby objects.

  • Nothing around the appliance is vibrating against it.

Water Droplets Around the Fridge or Lid Seal

Water droplets around the outside of the fridge or lid seal can be normal, particularly during warm or humid weather.

Moisture in humid air can condense when it comes into contact with the colder exterior surfaces of the appliance.

Wipe the moisture away with a soft cloth.

Recommended ROAM Temperature Settings

The ROAM manual provides the following example temperature settings:

  • Drinks: 5°C

  • Fresh Juice: 8–10°C

  • Red Wine: 13°C

  • Fruit: 5–8°C

  • Vegetables: 3–10°C

  • Cooked Food: 4°C

  • Seafood: -3°C

  • Meat: -10°C

  • Ice Cream: -15°C

These are general examples and the appropriate temperature will depend on what is being stored.

Quick Not-Cooling Checklist

Before contacting Customer Service, check:

  • Is the fridge receiving power?

  • Is the control panel illuminated?

  • Are all power connectors securely fitted?

  • Is the input voltage high enough?

  • Is an E1 low-voltage warning displayed?

  • Is the selected temperature low enough?

  • Is the lid fully closed?

  • Is the lid seal clean and undamaged?

  • Are the ventilation openings clear?

  • Is there sufficient space around the fridge?

  • Is the appliance overloaded?

  • Is the fridge positioned in an excessively hot environment?

  • Is an E0–E6 error code showing on the display?

When to Contact Subcold Customer Service

Contact Subcold Customer Service if the fridge still does not cool after completing the checks above, or if an error code remains after carrying out the recommended action.

When contacting us, please provide:

  • The ROAM model

  • The serial number

  • Your order number or proof of purchase

  • The temperature setting

  • The temperature shown on the display

  • Any error code displayed

  • Whether the compressor can be heard operating

  • Whether the cooling fan is operating

  • The power source being used — 12V, 24V, mains adapter, or compatible battery where applicable

  • A photograph or short video of the display and installation

This information will help the support team determine whether the issue relates to the power supply, battery protection, fan, compressor, control module, temperature sensor, installation, or another component.
