Thermoelectric Mini Fridge Not Cooling: Troubleshooting Guide

If your Subcold thermoelectric mini fridge is not cooling correctly, follow the checks below before contacting Customer Service.

Thermoelectric mini fridges operate differently from compressor fridges, so power supply issues, restricted airflow, or a blocked fan can have a significant effect on performance.

Reset the Mini Fridge

Begin by resetting the appliance:

  1. Switch the mini fridge off.

  2. Disconnect it from the power supply.

  3. Leave it switched off for approximately 1 hour.

  4. Reconnect the appliance and switch it back on.

A reset can often resolve minor operational or power-related issues.

Check the Power Indicator Light

Inspect the green power light at the rear of the appliance.

Solid Green Light

A solid green light usually confirms that the fridge is receiving power and operating.

Flashing or Dim Green Light

If the green light is flashing or appears dim, this may indicate that the power adapter is not supplying sufficient power.

In this situation, the adapter may be faulty and could require replacement.

Contact Subcold Customer Service with the appliance details so the correct replacement adapter can be identified.

No Green Light

If there is no green light:

  • Confirm that the appliance is switched on.

  • Check that the power cable is securely connected.

  • Test the wall socket with another appliance.

  • Check the plug fuse where applicable.

  • Inspect the adapter and cable for visible damage.

Do not use the appliance if the adapter, cable, or plug appears damaged.

Check the Power Connections

Make sure all power connections are secure.

Check that:

  • The mains plug is fully inserted into the wall socket.

  • The power connector is securely fitted into the rear of the mini fridge.

  • The wall socket is switched on.

  • The socket is operating correctly.

  • The plug fuse is intact, where fitted.

  • The cable is not trapped, crushed, or damaged.

Avoid using an overloaded extension lead or multi-socket adapter.

Select Cooling Mode

Check the control switch at the rear of the fridge.

Make sure the appliance is set to:

  • COOL, where the appliance has heating and cooling settings

  • ON, where the appliance has a standard on/off cooling switch

If the fridge has a WARM setting, make sure this has not been selected accidentally.

Once cooling mode has been selected, the green indicator light should illuminate.

Inspect the Fan

Thermoelectric mini fridges rely on fans to move air and remove heat.

Check that the fan is not obstructed by:

  • Dust

  • Hair

  • Packaging material

  • Debris

  • Foreign objects

  • Items placed too close to the ventilation openings

Restricted airflow can prevent the fridge from cooling properly.

Clean the Fan and Ventilation Area

Before cleaning:

  1. Switch the fridge off.

  2. Unplug it from the power supply.

  3. Allow the appliance to stop completely.

Carefully remove dust from the fan and ventilation areas using:

  • A vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment

  • A clean, dry, soft brush

  • A dry cloth

Do not insert fingers or objects into the fan blades.

Do not spray water or cleaning products into the fan, vents, or electrical components.

Allow Adequate Ventilation

Place the mini fridge in a cool, well-ventilated location.

Make sure there is sufficient space around the rear and sides so heat can escape.

Do not:

  • Place the fridge against a wall

  • Cover the air vents

  • Install it inside a closed cupboard

  • Position it near a radiator or cooker

  • Leave it in direct sunlight

  • Place items against the rear fan

Poor ventilation can cause reduced cooling, longer running times, and overheating.

Test the Fridge Empty

After completing the checks:

  1. Make sure the fridge is empty.

  2. Close the door securely.

  3. Set the appliance to cooling mode.

  4. Leave it running for at least 1 hour.

  5. Avoid opening the door during the test.

The interior temperature should begin to decrease during this period.

Thermoelectric fridges cool gradually, and their internal temperature is affected by the surrounding room temperature.

For best results, use pre-chilled drinks or products rather than placing warm items inside.

Check the Door Closure

Make sure the door closes fully and that nothing is preventing it from sealing.

Check for:

  • Packaging around the door

  • Items obstructing the door

  • Dirt around the seal

  • Damage to the seal

  • An uneven surface causing poor alignment

Warm air entering the appliance can significantly reduce cooling performance.

Understanding Thermoelectric Cooling

Thermoelectric mini fridges are designed to cool below the surrounding room temperature rather than maintain the same fixed temperatures as a household compressor fridge.

Performance can be affected by:

  • High room temperatures

  • Direct sunlight

  • Poor ventilation

  • Warm items placed inside

  • Frequent door openings

  • Fan obstruction

  • A weak or faulty power adapter

The appliance may take several hours to reach its lowest achievable temperature.

When to Contact Support

Contact Subcold Customer Service if:

  • The green light continues to flash.

  • The green light remains dim.

  • The adapter becomes unusually hot.

  • The fan does not operate.

  • The appliance remains completely silent.

  • The fridge does not begin cooling after the checks above.

  • The power cable or adapter is damaged.

  • The problem continues after the one-hour reset.

When contacting support, please provide:

  • The fridge model

  • The batch number shown on the appliance

  • The serial number, where available

  • Your order number or proof of purchase

  • Whether the green light is solid, flashing, dim, or off

  • Whether the fan is operating

  • A photograph or short video showing the rear controls and indicator light

This information will help the support team determine whether the issue relates to the adapter, fan, power connection, control switch, or another component.
