How to Reverse the Door on Your Fridge

Updated 4 August 2026
0 views

Some Subcold fridge models allow the door to be repositioned so that it opens from the opposite side. This can be useful when the appliance is installed in a location where the original door direction restricts access.

Before beginning, make sure the fridge is empty, switched off, and unplugged from the mains power supply.

Tools Required

You will need:

  • A flathead screwdriver

  • A battery drill or screwdriver

  • A Phillips-head drill bit

  • A soft towel or protective covering

  • Assistance from another person where necessary

Important Safety Information

The fridge door may be heavier than expected. Support it carefully when removing the hinges to prevent it from falling or becoming damaged.

When laying the fridge down, place it on a clean, soft, and stable surface to protect the appliance. Take care not to damage the pipework or components at the rear.

How to Reverse the Fridge Door

1. Remove the Top Hinge Cover

Use a flathead screwdriver to gently prise up the top hinge cover on the right-hand side of the fridge.

Carefully slide the cover forward and remove it. Avoid using excessive force, as this may damage the plastic clips.

2. Remove the Top Hinge

Support the fridge door while removing the hinge.

Using a battery drill with a Phillips-head bit, unscrew the three screws securing the top hinge.

Lift the hinge away from the fridge and place it somewhere safe with the screws.

3. Remove the Door

Carefully lift the door straight upwards to release it from the bottom hinge pin.

Place the door on a soft, stable surface to prevent scratches or damage.

4. Access the Bottom Hinge

With assistance where required, carefully lay the fridge on its back.

Use a protective covering underneath the appliance to prevent damage to the cabinet or flooring.

5. Remove the Bottom Hinge

Locate the three screws securing the bottom hinge.

Remove the screws using the battery drill, then detach the hinge from the fridge.

6. Refit the Bottom Hinge

Move the bottom hinge to the opposite side of the fridge.

Position it using the corresponding pre-drilled holes and securely refit the three screws.

7. Refit the Door

Carefully position the door onto the bottom hinge pin.

Make sure the door is fully seated and supported before continuing.

8. Remove the Blanking Plate

Before fitting the top hinge on the opposite side, remove the blanking plate covering the hinge mounting holes.

The blanking plate can normally be moved to the side where the original hinge was fitted.

9. Refit the Top Hinge

Position the top hinge on the opposite side of the fridge.

Check that the door is level, straight, and correctly aligned with the fridge cabinet.

Once aligned, securely tighten the three hinge screws using the battery drill. Do not overtighten the screws, as this could damage the threads or hinge mounting points.

10. Check the Door Alignment

Open and close the door several times to confirm that:

  • The door moves freely.

  • The door is level.

  • The seal makes contact with the fridge frame.

  • There are no gaps around the door seal.

  • The door remains closed correctly.

Adjust the hinge position slightly if necessary before fully tightening the screws.

Returning the Fridge to Operation

Carefully return the fridge to its upright position.

Leave the appliance standing upright for at least 2 to 3 hours before reconnecting it to the mains power supply. This allows the refrigerant and compressor oil to settle after the fridge has been laid down.

Once the waiting period has passed, plug the fridge back in and switch it on.

When to Contact Support

Contact the Subcold Customer Service Team if:

  • The hinge holes do not align on the opposite side.

  • The door cannot be levelled correctly.

  • The door seal does not make full contact with the fridge frame.

  • The hinge, screws, or blanking plate become damaged.

  • Your fridge model does not appear to have reversible-door fittings.

Always check the product manual before beginning, as the exact hinge arrangement may vary between models.
