If you are experiencing an issue with your Subcold coolbox, the cause is often related to how the coolbox is being used, cleaned, stored, or handled.
Use the guide below to identify the most common problems and how to resolve them.
Ice Melts Too Quickly
If ice is melting faster than expected, this may be caused by:
Opening the lid too frequently
Leaving the coolbox in direct sunlight
Using too little ice compared with the amount of contents
Adding warm food or drinks
Leaving excessive empty space inside the coolbox
To improve ice retention:
Keep the coolbox in a shaded or cool location.
Avoid opening the lid unnecessarily.
Use a higher ice-to-contents ratio.
Pre-chill food and drinks before placing them inside.
Pre-cool the coolbox where possible before use.
Keep the lid securely closed.
Fill unused space with additional ice or ice packs where practical.
The more frequently warm air enters the coolbox, the faster the ice will melt.
Coolbox Retains an Unpleasant Odour
Lingering smells are usually caused by food residue, spillages, moisture, or the coolbox being stored before it has dried completely.
To remove odours:
Empty the coolbox completely.
Wash the inside using warm water and baking soda.
Pay particular attention to corners, seals, and drainage areas.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Leave the lid open and allow the coolbox to air dry completely.
Do not store the coolbox while it is still damp, as trapped moisture can cause musty smells or mould.
For persistent odours, an open container of baking soda can be left inside the dry coolbox for a period of time before storage.
Lid Does Not Close Properly
If the lid will not close or seal correctly, check for:
Dirt or debris around the sealing area
Food or packaging obstructing the lid
Misalignment
A warped lid
Damage caused by excessive heat
Clean the seal and the area where the lid meets the coolbox body using warm water and a soft cloth.
Make sure nothing inside the coolbox is preventing the lid from closing fully.
Avoid leaving the coolbox in extreme heat, such as inside a hot vehicle for extended periods, as excessive temperatures may cause plastic components to distort.
Drain Plug Is Leaking
If water is leaking from the drain plug:
Check that the plug is fully tightened or securely closed.
Inspect the plug for dirt or debris.
Clean the plug and surrounding seal.
Check for cracks, wear, or damage.
If the plug is damaged or no longer seals correctly, it may need to be replaced.
Do not overtighten the plug, as this may damage the threads or seal.
Exterior Scratches or Dents
Cosmetic scratches or dents can occur through impact, rough handling, transport, or placing heavy objects on the coolbox.
To help prevent damage:
Lift rather than drag the coolbox.
Avoid dropping or striking it against hard surfaces.
Do not place excessive weight on the lid.
Store it somewhere protected when not in use.
Secure it during transport to prevent movement.
Minor cosmetic marks will not normally affect cooling performance.
How to Get the Best Performance from Your Coolbox
For maximum cooling and ice retention:
Pre-chill drinks and food before loading.
Pre-cool the coolbox before use where possible.
Use plenty of ice or suitable ice packs.
Keep the coolbox as full as practical.
Keep it out of direct sunlight.
Open the lid as little as possible.
Close the lid securely after every use.
Drain excess water only when necessary, as cold meltwater can also help maintain a low internal temperature.
Cleaning and Storage
After use:
Empty the coolbox.
Drain any remaining water.
Wash the interior with warm, mild soapy water.
Rinse thoroughly.
Dry completely.
Store with the lid slightly open where practical to allow airflow.
Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals that could damage the interior surface.
